St. Lawrence College was founded in 1967 as a school of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto, Ontario. In addition to business administration and engineering and technology courses, the college also offers classes in electronics and home economics. Founded by William Davis, commonly known as “Father of Ontario College,” the college aims to guide and educate people for work in their own areas. Applied Arts and Technology became the dominant focus of college education. Students were offered short-term professional and occupational courses and certificate programmes that ensured employment in other professions, even though they were short-term.
Due to a surge in new student enrollment, the university has grown substantially since its founding. In addition to being located across the St. Lawrence River, all three St. Lawrence campuses are located near major Canadian cities, making them ideal locations for students. Although Brockville had been initially designated to serve as St. Lawrence’s primary campus, the city’s limited coverage forced the college to settle on Kingston as its final site of operations. Compared to St. Lawrence University’s other two campuses, Brockville is the tinier one. The college’s primary campuses are located in Cornwall and Kingston, which were initially intended to serve the East Ontario region.
